Titre: On (Non-)roothood of the Japanese Politeness Marker -Mas-
Resume_editeur: This paper argues that the Japanese politeness marker -mas- has a wider distribution than previously thought, and that its occurrence in a subset of complement clauses can be accounted for in terms of long-distance feature transmission. It is argued that long-distance feature transmission is prevented if the complement clause constitutes a phase, suggesting that the duplication of -mas- in the main and complement clause is not just a matter of style, but a phenomenon to be treated in narrow syntax.
